The Horror Writers Association (HWA), the premier organization of writers and publishers of horror and dark fantasy, today announced the recipients of the association’s Richard Laymon President’s Award for Service. HWA’s President Lisa Morton has chosen the publicity team of Doug Murano, Tom Calen, and Brock Cooper to receive the 2014 Richard Laymon Award. Murano, Calen, and Cooper will receive the award at the Bram Stoker Awards® Banquet in Atlanta on May 9th, 2015, held as part of the World Horror Convention.

Instituted in 2000, the award is named in honor of Richard Laymon, who died in 2000 while serving as the Horror Writers Association’s President. As its name implies, it is given by the HWA’s sitting President. The Award is presented to a volunteer who has served HWA in an especially exemplary manner and has shown extraordinary dedication to the organization.

“These three gentlemen have completely re-created HWA’s promotion and publicity, taking it from almost zero to sixty in record time,” Morton said. “Thanks to this amazing trio, we’ve received hundreds of thousands of hits on campaigns like our ‘Horror Selfies’, our press releases have been receiving international attention, and more readers than ever know about the Bram Stoker Awards®. Our former President Rocky Wood held Doug, Tom, and Brock’s work in the highest standing, and I share that admiration and appreciation.”

About Doug Murano, Tom Calen and Brock Cooper

South Dakota native Doug Murano lives somewhere between Mount Rushmore and the mighty Missouri River. Since 2008, his short stories have appeared in a number of venues. He co-edited the Amazon best-selling horror anthology, Shadows Over Main Street, and is an Affiliate member of the Horror Writers Association. He has served on the HWA’s communications team since October 2013, and in 2014, he established the HWA’s Know a Nominee interview series, which provides insights and information into the work of Bram Stoker Award® nominees.

A New York City native, Tom holds a degree in English and spent several years in the business world before abandoning all reason and deciding to write full-time. He is the author of the bestselling horror series, The Pandemic Sequence. His seventh novel, the supernatural thriller Sarah of the Romani, was published earlier this year. In early 2014, Tom moved to Nicaragua, where he is working on his next book. Tom joined the Horror Writers Association as an Active member in July 2014.

Brock Cooper is a native of Illinois, where he lives with his wife, Jessica, and three boys. He studied physics and English at Illinois Wesleyan University, but his calling was always writing in one way or the other. He spent seven years as a journalist before moving into the world of marketing and media relations. His short story, The Devil is in the Details, made it to the preliminary list of the Bram Stoker Awards® in 2010 and has since been optioned for a film.

An Office Space meets Shaun of the Dead action-packed horror comedy, BLOODSUCKING BASTARDS stars Fran Kranz as Evan Sanders, a low-level, dutiful employee stuck in a boring job at a soul-killing every corporation. Evan’s the kind of guy who does all the work and gets none of the credit, but at least he gets to spend his days with his beautiful co-worker/girlfriend Amanda (Emma Fitzpatrick) and his slacker best friend Tim (Joey Kern).

Unfortunately, it all falls apart in one fell swoop when Amanda breaks up with him and Evan’s boss Ted (Joel Murray) hands his promotion to his college nemesis Max (Pedro Pascal). And it isn’t just their sordid past Evan has to deal with. After his fellow officemates start going through disturbing changes (which, paradoxically, make them better employees) and bodies begin to pile up, Evan learns the horrible truth: Max is a vampire. And even worse… a vamp with a plan.

BLOODSUCKING BASTARDS takes audiences on a hilarious, blood-spattered roller coaster ride in the most terrifying locale of all: the American workplace. Evan must find a way to stop the evil brewing amidst the cubicles, expose Max as the bloodsucking bastard that he is, win back Amanda, and save his pals before his life and career go from dead-end… to just dead.

Horror icon Robert Englund — Freddy Krueger himself — has confirmed his appearance at Famous Monsters’ Silver Scream Festival, joining his NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET co-star Heather Langenkamp for a tribute to their late director Wes Craven (the ELM STREET series, SCREAM, THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT).

With more than 150 credits, Englund played the scarred slasher Freddy Krueger in all of the original ELM STREET films and has appeared in other genre classics such as URBAN LEGEND, WISHMASTER, HATCHET, and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, in addition to the 1980s Sci-Fi television series V. He’s twice been nominated for the Saturn Awards for Best Supporting Actor by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films, and in 2001 was bestowed the Academy’s Life Career Award. His memoir, HOLLYWOOD MONSTER: A WALK DOWN ELM STREET WITH THE MAN OF YOUR DREAMS, was published in 2009.

The Silver Scream Film & Comic Festival, scheduled for March 4-6th in Santa Rosa, California, will screen both A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and NEW NIGHTMARE in honor of Craven. There will also be appearances by seven-time Oscar-winning makeup effects artist Rick Baker (MEN IN BLACK, ED WOOD, THE WOLFMAN) and legendary director John Landis (THE BLUES BROTHERS, ANIMAL HOUSE, TRADING PLACES) in honor of the 35th anniversary of their seminal creature feature AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON; Bela Lugosi Jr.; SIMPSONS character designer Eric Keyes; and graphic novel superstar Darick Robertson, as well as an awards ceremony and screenings of the winning films.

If Halloween means monsters and partying, then a Famous Monsters Party is the place to be.

San Jose Convention Center will be hosting the FAMOUS MONSTERS HALLOWEEN BASH, Oct 27-29, 2017, and Cosmic Con has hit the ground running with the guest roster, announcing stars from HELLRAISER (Doug Bradley, aka Pinhead), GREMLINS (Zach Galligan), and RE-ANIMATOR (Jeffrey Combs), as well as Richard Brake from GAME OF THRONES and Jeff Daniel Phillips of HBO’s WESTWORLD. Original Scream Queen Adrienne Barbeau (SWAMP THING) will be there, along with legendary stunt man Tom Morga, who has played three different slashers on screen (Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Leatherface). “Halloween has become the holiday when people just kick back and have fun,” says Cosmic Con Producer and Famous Monsters Publisher Philip Kim. “There’s none of the stress of other traditional holidays; it’s just one big masquerade ball, and that’s exactly the vibe that Famous Monsters is going for in San Jose.”

In addition to celebrity guests, vendors, and artists, Cosmic Con promises to bring virtual reality into the mix, debuting original VR material based on comics from American Gothic Press, Famous Monsters’ publishing division. “Virtual reality is at the cutting edge of entertainment,” says Kim, “and quality genre content is in high demand. What’s more, Sydney-based genre fans will get a taste of Monster Pictures’ annual Melbourne-based festival this March, thanks to a unique partnership with Australia’s largest cinema chain Event Cinemas to present The Monster Fest Travelling Sideshow, beginning at the prestigious George Street Cinema in Sydney March 9-11, 2017 with subsequent dates in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

The Monster Fest Travelling Sideshow will be a mix of horror-centric highlights from Monster Fest 2016 (see the archive of 2016 films and events HERE) and select premieres, including the Australian Premieres of Jordan Peele’s acclaimed racial horror GET OUT and the highly-anticipated all-female horror anthology XX (which is distributed in ANZ by Monster Fest parent company Monster Pictures), as well as the World Premiere of Nik Kacevski’s Sydney-made SKINFORD, with cast and crew in person for a hometown red carpet debut.

MTV today announced that Teen Wolf will premiere on a new night beginning Sunday, July 30 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Additionally, the show is returning to the Con, having landed a coveted Hall H panel on Thursday, July 20th at 2:00 p.m. ET/PT. Teen Wolf sits as the number one television series in the Comic-Con social sphere for the past two years.

The team behind HEROES DOME is excited to let you in on more secrets… and there be HORROR!

As we already announced actor Lew Temple (The Walking Dead, Halloween, The Devil’s Rejects) as our very first actor-hero to our very first HEROES DOME convention – to be held in the biggest festival stage in Holland which is also one of the most impressive football stadium: the Gelredome – we just could not pass this Halloween without letting you know about our DARK ZONE and even more guests.

The Dark Zone will be one of the prominent parts of Heroes Dome and will be the area you will get your horror-groove on! It will be filled to the rim with grizzly guests, malicious merchandise, evil events and frightening fans!

The veil is lifted on this Halloween-evening and we introduce you to artist Patrick Cornelis (Virus) and Scandinavian actress Sarah Giercksky (Wounded).

Artist Patrick Cornelis hails from Belgium and is working on his zombie-infested, horror-fantasy series VIRUS, for which he is hard at work on #3 already. Patrick will be hosting his personal zombies (cosplayers of course!! Do not be too afraid!) in his horror-room in the Dark Zone at Heroes Dome.

Aside from being an actress, Sarah Giercksky writes screenplays, does SFX, and directs movies and will be more than happy to answer questions on all things creative and gore!!

As the Dark Zone at Heroes Dome will grow bigger and bigger, you will notice that it is powered by “Dark Zone Studios,” a consortium who has been working in the international horror convention scene for years and who presented guests at various shows in England, America and Germany.

The HEROES DOME convention will be the first Dutch popculture multi-media convention where diversity as well as the feeling of being a “hero” and seeing “heroes” is truly the core of this first event. The purpose for HEROES DOME is to give Holland (but we welcome any international visitor!) a truly celebrated event for visitors as well as exhibitioners and (international and national) guests.

The HEROES DOME convention will be hosted in the Gelredome on June 2-3, 2018.

10-10:50 am: Becky Spratford will be moderating a panel entitled, “Why Horror Matters: A Conversation With Experts on the Genre and Its Practitioners” featuring Eric Guignard, Les Klinger, Grady Hendrix, Andy Davidson, and Christopher Geissler, a librarian from the John Hay Library which holds the papers of H.P. Lovecraft among other horror legends.

11- 11:50 am: Bram Stoker Nominated author Mary SanGiovanni will be moderating, “A Panel of Fresh Voices for Your Collections.” This panel will gather newer authors who many library workers may not have heard of before but whose works are a great choice for public library collections, including Nadia Bulkin, Stephen Kozeniewski, Erin Sweet Al-Mehairi, and Morgan Sylvia.

12 – 1:30 pm: All attendees will enjoy a lunch together with time for networking, socializing, and the chance to participate in an AMA [Ask Me Anything] with Becky and Kristi.

1:30- 2:20 pm: After lunch, J.G. Faherty, the Library and Literacy Coordinator for HWA will moderate the panel, “Horror Programming at Your Library,” featuring Christopher Golden and his partner in the Merrimack Valley Halloween Book Festival, Haverhill [MA]  librarian Liz Rieur, as well as Grady Hendrix who, in partnership with Quirk Books, has presented at numerous public libraries across the country.

2:30- 4:30 pm: The day will wrap up with a traditional “Book Buzz” featuring horror titles. Confirmed participating publishers include MacMillan, JournalStone, Sinister Grin, Bloodshot Books, Quirk, and Cemetery Dance although more are joining the party with each passing day. Each publisher will present their upcoming titles for the library workers in attendance and all attendees will go home with a tote bag and ARCs of some of the discussed titles.

It should be the perfect day for library workers to learn, network, and just have some good old-fashioned scary fun.

Vulcanello Productions presents a celebration of the works of cult American Horror writer, H.P. Lovecraft.

Building on the success of productions such as Hidden Basement’s Shadow Over Innsmouth and Vulcanello’s own gender-switched Mountains of Madness at the London Horror Festival, this week-long event showcases seven different shows, including two world premieres, for fans of Cthulu, tentacled horrors, creeping insanity from other dimensions, and other lightly baked elements of the Lovecraft Mythos.

Among the works of Lovecraft adapted for this event are: The Shadow Over Innsmouth (in two versions: one interactive, one comedy), The Thing on the Doorstep, At The Mountains of Madness, and Pickman’s Model. Inspired from the mythos (of things creeping into our world from beyond) is The Dead, LIve; and for something completely different there is alive, audience-inspired horror improvisational group, The Society of Strange. Each show will be on for two performances, except for The Dead, Live, which is Sunday matinee only. Participating companies are: The Other Realm, Vulcanello Productions, Hidden Basement Productions, Scytheplays Limited, Raising Ashes Theatre, and Extempore Theater. Each show is approximately one hour long, making it easy to have a double-header night of theater.

“The fans made it clear they want more,” says festival founder T..L Wiswell. “Lovecraft is fun to watch on stage. And for people who make theater AND love the mythos, this is a great chance to geek out like there’s no tomorrow. There are several Lovecraft conventions in the US, such as NecronomiCon and CthuluCon … I was sure there was enough support in London to justify six straight nights of this. It’s not really going to get the Donmar audience but we know the fans are out there, occasionally masquerading as a part of human society.”

The AT&T AUDIENCE Network series Mr. Mercedes, produced by Sonar Entertainment, is returning to San Diego Comic-Con July 19-21 with the cast and creators of Season 2 for the Mr. Mercedes Immersive Experience and show panel.

The Mr. Mercedes Immersive Experience will give fans a glimpse into the past and a peek into the future of the AT&T AUDIENCE Network original series based on the trilogy by Stephen King. Fans can be the first to play the virtual reality (VR) escape room game, Mr. Mercedes: Lair Escape, on the HTC Vive Pro – the next generation of VR headsets. In the Mr. Mercedes: Finders Keepers augmented reality (AR) adventure game, they’ll collect clues to unlock never-before-seen content and special prizes.

The Mr. Mercedes Immersive Experience will include:

• Augmented Reality Adventure Game – Download the app to embark on an AR-driven investigation helping Detective Bill Hodges crack the case and claim a reward if you succeed.
• Virtual Reality Escape Room Game – Be fully immersed in a virtual escape room inside Brady’s lair. Escape before time runs out or you’re trapped forever!
• Recreating the Physical World of Mr. Mercedes – The show’s set designers are recreating Finders Keepers, Mercy General Hospital and Brady’s lair using actual props.
• Bringing Brady to Life Through Projection Mapping – 3-D light projection will creepily bring Brady to life in his hospital bed. Is he in a coma or did you just see him move?
• Lenticular Photo Experience – This photo op will transform the participant’s face into Brady’s along with a socially shareable GIF.
• Private Screening Room – Media, VIP and lucky fans will get the chance to watch a sneak peek of Season 2.

The series picks up a year after Brady Hartsfield’s thwarted attempt to perpetrate a second mass murder in the community of Bridgton, Ohio. Since the incident, Hartsfield has been hospitalized in a vegetative state. Retired Detective Bill Hodges has done his best to move on from his Brady obsession, teaming up with Holly Gibney to open Finders Keepers, a private investigative agency. But when unexplainable occurrences begin to affect hospital staff members attending to Brady, Hodges is haunted by the feeling that Brady is somehow responsible.

The original cast, which includes Brendan Gleeson (Harry Potter) as Detective Bill Hodges, Harry Treadaway (Penny Dreadful) as Brady Hartsfield, Jharrel Jerome (Moonlight) as Jerome Robinson, Scott Lawrence (Avatar) as Detective Peter Dixon, Breeda Wool (Unreal) as Lou Linklatter, Justine Lupe (Francis Ha) as Holly Gibney, Nancy Travis (How I Met Your Mother) as Donna Hodges, and Holland Taylor (The Truman Show) as Ida Silver, is joined by Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) as Brady Hartsfield’s doctor Dr. Felix Babineau, Tessa Ferrer (Grey’s Anatomy) as Dr. Babineau’s wife Cora Babineau, and Maximiliano Hernandez (Sicario) as Assistant DA Antonio Montez for Season 2.

Season 2 of Mr. Mercedes will premiere on AT&T AUDIENCE Network on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Written by television veterans David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies, Ally McBeal) and Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, The Drop, Live by Night) and directed by Jack Bender (Game of Thrones, Lost, Under the Dome), the second season will be based on Stephen King’s best-selling Bill Hodges Trilogy, which includes, Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers, and End of Watch. King, Kelley, Bender, Lehane, Marty Bowen, and Wyck Godfrey of Temple Hill Entertainment, and Tom Lesinski and Jenna Santoianni of Sonar Entertainment will serve as executive producers.
